We are strange creatures. We try to freeze the colors of fleeting things and we try to erase the vividness of what deserves to stay. We hold on too tightly to what is already changing and we stop paying attention to what is already slipping away, and most of the time we do not notice we are doing either until it is already done.
This piece is made from 252 circles, each one dyed naturally with flowers and roots and fruits and leaves, no artificial pigments, nothing designed to last. Making it was an act of deliberate presence, of choosing to pay attention to what was already there instead of reaching past it toward what might come next. The colors will shift and fade over time. Some will vanish entirely. Each time you see it, it will be slightly different from the time before.
I did not design this as a flaw to be corrected. Flowers are not meant to last. They exist to teach us presence. They bloom, they dazzle, and then they are gone, and if you are not paying attention you miss them entirely. The beauty and the disappearance are the same thing. So is the piece. So, I think, are we.
The colors in this piece will change with time. Some will vanish.
Each time you see it, it will be slightly different from the time before.
Just like us.
Because we too have a Fleeting nature.
